Abstract:

The repository site for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Finland will be selected by the end of the year 2000. Preliminary site investigations have been made in five areas since the year 1987. All the areas consist of Precambrian crystalline bedrock. Site investigations carried out so far have been mainly aimed to identify and characterize the geological structures, especially fractures and fracture zones with high hydraulical conductivity. Interpretation and modelling is an important part of the whole site investigation phase. A 3-D modelling system has proved to be necessary for integrated analysis of the results obtained. A computer aided techniques have been developed and used in modelling the geological structures of the study sites.
