The Ductile-Brittle Transition in Ice & Size Effect

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Cold Regions Engineering

Abstract:

This paper considers the ductile to brittle transition in ice under compression. Two criteria, one phenomenological and the other more physical, are presented for the transition strain rate. Parameters incorporated are the macroscopic size of an ice feature, its fracture toughness, friction coefficient, creep rate, and microstructural scale.
