Abstract:

This proceedings consists of papers presented at the Cold Regions Engineering Specialty Conference held in West Lebanon, New Hampshire from February 26-28, 1991. The papers cover nine different subject areas of cold regions engineering: Frozen soil mechanics, frost action, sanitary engineering, building construction, river ice hydraulics, roads/airfields, ice mechanics, cold regions instrumentation, and drifting snow. Within these broad categories, such topics as sludge dewatering in freezing beds; research of shock waves in frozen soil; impact of cold weather on construction scheduling; river ice management; soil-stress cell interaction; fractal crushing; and snow fence materials are discussed. The research presented in this proceedings will not only help the engineer to understand many of the problems related to launching any type of activity in the cold regions of the world, but will also provide him with possible solutions to these problems.
