Abstract:

A generalized diffusion wave model for flood routing is presented. The model can incorporate detailed data on natural cross sections and river bed geometry. An accurate numerical method and a quasi-analytical solution are developed, verified, and applied to route a flood wave in a hypothetical channel. Numerical experiments show that the quasi -- analytical solution compares favorably with the numerical solution. The effects of hydrograph shape on the propagation of flood waves are also investigated.
