Abstract:

The theoretical base of the principle of minimum energy dissipation rate and other related stationarity hypotheses have been reviewed. Recent applications of the theory to the calculation of fluvial channel geometry, bed form, and channel development and adjustment have also been reviewed. It is concluded that the theory, when applied properly, can be used to help solve fluvial problems containing multiple degrees of freedom of change.
