Abstract:

Approximately 500 bed material samples were collected from the thalweg of the Lower Mississippi River. At each sample location, a sonic record of the bed was obtained. From the appearance of the sonic records, the bed material could usually be predicted as being one of four major categories: (1) fine to coarse gravel, or mud (composed of deposited silts, clays, and very fine sand); (2) sand; (3) in situ clay outcrops; and (4) debris covered beds.
