Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering and Business: Converting Engineers to Businessmen

Abstract:

During its first year, Tri-Met's Light Rail service, MAX, carried twice as many riders as originally projected. What is generally not understood is that MAX is more then a transportation investment. MAX is part of a conscious strategy to shape regional growth by coordinating transportation investments with land use policies. Portland's challenge is to continue the MAX success story. More MAX lines can help shape destiny and carry Portland's healthy economy and unique quality of life into the 21st century. This paper discusses community and economic growth, land use/transit relationship, local government, private sector, and other aspects of the subject.
