Abstract:

The two most commonly used relational DBMS (Data Base Management System) softwares are Ashton-Tate's 'dBASE III Plus', and Microrim's 'R:Base 5000'. This paper illustrates the use of these two softwares in the field of pavement maintenance through a simple case study. The case study involved developing two pavement inventory and evaluation systems (PIES), one in dBASE III environment, and the other in R:Base. The data selected for the case study are reasonable approximations of realistic data that might be selected for use in a pavement management system. These two PIES were actually developed in connection to two microcomputer applications workshops, to demonstrate the use of commercial database managers in pavement evaluation and analysis.
