Abstract:

This paper presents a prototype expert system, (SIGNALEXPERT), for signalized intersection analysis and design. The SIGNALEXPERT consists of four modules. The first module determines if the installation of a signal is justified for a given intersection under the traffic conditions described by the user. The second module contains the geometric design rules and parameters and determines the most suitable geometric configuration. The third module establishes recommendations related to the signalization plan, while the fourth module analyzes the performance of the intersection by calculating the volume to capacity ratio and the intersection delay. The program is menu driven. The computations required for the evaluation of the level of service are performed by an external spreadsheet program and they are automatically transferred to the expert system for decision making.
