Abstract:

This paper presents an overview of various developments in materials technology and design procedures in the Western Hemisphere over the last 20 years. Some projections for anticipated changes in the industry for the next 10 years are discussed. In addition, worthwhile research directions for the next decade are outlined. Wherever possible, objective comparisons of design and construction practices among technologically competitive countries in Europe and North America are given.
