Abstract:

The paper demonstrates the capabilities of probabilistic structure analysis methods as a tool to support the design and manufacture of the Ariane 5 Unequipped Booster Case within a RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability, safety) integrated development approach. Their applicability to the failure modes buckling and mountability is shown, which are safety and availability related. In a first approach to the buckling mode, the formulation for dimensioning purposes is utilized; it seems to yield too large failure probabilities necessitating further studies. Also, load distribution among parallel members having slip is addressed, for which probabilistic analysis of the geometric tolerance combination problem is performed. Manufacture tolerances are thus evaluated and improvements, i.e. narrower tolerance bands, specified.
