Abstract:

Traditional methods of quantifying safety of highway bridges have been associated with deterministic analysis. However, ascertaining the true measure of safety, or reliability, should not follow a deterministic approach but rather a probabilistic one. A procedure is described to develop a probability based reliability analysis to determine the true measure of safety for deteriorating steel truss bridges. Markov series is used to predict the rate of deterioration and future safety index of the bridge.
