Abstract:

A new approach for the reliability calculation of miter gates is presented. The reliability and hazard functions are related to the surficial wear of miter gates on their horizontal sill. A gate's present and future deterioration can then be assessed when this surficial wear is detected. Three miter gates, experiencing operational problems, are examined. The significant similarities between the predicted and observed results are outlined.
