Some Considerations on the Acceptable Probability of Failure

by J. K. Vrijling, Delft Univ of Technology, Netherlands,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structural Safety and Reliability

Abstract:

The acceptable failure probability of technical structures and systems is studied in this paper. The problem is approached from two points of view: the personal and the social point of view. The different view points lead to different criteria. It is proposed to adopt in a practical case the most stringent of the criteria as a guide line for decision making.
