Abstract:

Random propagation of a semi-elliptical surface crack is investigated as a bivariate stochastic process. Under a few assumptions, a probability distribution of the surface crack propagation is first derived in a closed form, by applying the extended Markov approximation method. Next, a residual life distribution of the surface crack propagation is derived. Finally, the propagating equation is revised by taking the size effect into account, and a probability distribution of the life until the crack penetration is derived.
