Abstract:

Autocorrelation functions are described. Data from several North Sea sites are analyzed with respect to the vertical and horizontal autocorrelation of a number of soil properties. Based on these analyses, a simple method for estimating autocorrelation functions is recommended. The use of autocorrelation functions for describing a site probabilistically, in particular for stochastic interpolation (kriging) and reduction of uncertainty due to spatial averaging, is discussed.
