Abstract:

Much talk in tunnel circles has centered on various methods of tunneling, especially the new Austrian tunneling method, or NATM. To be a true tunneling method it must provide a description both for the method of excavation and for the method of ground support. After extensive research, this author has discovered other methods: the very old tunneling method or VOTM (pronounced votum), the early American tunneling method or EATM (pronounced eatum), the American steel support method or ASSM (pronounced assem), the old Austrian tunneling method or OATM (pronounced oatum) and the ever popular, all American method, the tunnel boring tunneling method or TBTM (pronounced, of course, to-beat'em).
