Abstract:

Described herein are the rationales for, descriptions of and evaluations of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) trackbed rehabilitation and construction techniques recently utilized in various classes of tracks. A portion of the track structure contains a mat of a slightly modified hot-mix asphalt highway paving mix. The mix is produced in a typical hot-mix asphalt batch plant and is placed in the trackbed in variable thicknesses using conventional and modified highway paving equipment. The performances of all the HMA trackbed sections to date have been excellent as evidenced by visual observations and performance data. Design criteria, typical installation practices and economic considerations are discussed.
