Abstract:

The results of a hydraulic model study to investigate the feasibility of using an orifice spillway at a generating station in northern Manitoba, Canada are presented. It has been suggested that the use of an orifice spillway at the site, in lieu of a conventional overflow spillway, could result in considerable savings in construction costs. The model studies described in the paper were performed to refine the design of the hydraulic elements of the orifice spillway and to investigate the operational characteristics of the proposed structure. The results of the tests indicate that an orifice spillway is a viable alternative for the site.
