Abstract:

The Lopez-Angostura Project is located on the Yaque del Norte River in the Dominican Republic near the City of Santiago. A 24 m high dam, a 3.6 km long power tunnel, a pit powerhouse with 18 MW installed capacity exploit the available gross head of 50 m and a regulated flow of 50 m3/s. The tunnel alignment crosses weak unconsolidated sedimentary rocks. The task was to design and construct a watertight tunnel thru these variable materials. This paper describes the optimum tunnel design, field measurement of the modulus of elasticity of the tunnel rock, concrete mix design, tunnel construction and watering procedures. The successful construction of a watertight tunnel was verified by watering tests.
