Abstract:

This paper is a brief summary of a report of the same title prepared for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) as part of its program to study ways to economically improve dam safety. Among the parameters addressed are: The effect of foundation characteristics upon uplift; Influences of foundation grout curtains and other seepage control measures; The effectiveness of various types of drains in reducing uplift; Drain maintenance; Importance of gallery locations; Response of uplift to headwater and tailwater, relative to magnitude and time. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made for further study and research.
