Probabilistic Approaches to Maintenance

by Walter O. Wunderlich, Water-Wunderlich Consulting, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

All structures and their components are subject to the aging process, to wear and tear in the performance of assigned functions and to deterioration by exposure to the operating environment. Left to themselves, all structures will eventually become inefficient and finally fail, as their reliability reaches zero. Maintenance can stem this deterioration process and assure acceptably high reliability and efficiency throughout the project's life. The probabilistic aspects of using maintenance are discussed.
