Closed Conduit Vapor Lock

Abstract:

Closed conduit vapor lock can occur when a cross country liquid pipeline is displaced with a gas and the gas is allowed to get ahead of the liquid/gas interface. A simple hydraulic model demonstrates the series manometer that can form to stop the displacement. The distance that the gas migrates ahead of the interface can be calculated using detailed topographic pipeline profiles provided that accurate pressures have been recorded and the physical parameters of the system are known.
