Baseflow and Beta Distribution

Abstract:

For water resources projects, design engineers are often required to separate total flow into baseflow and direct runoff. During such studies, baseflow is considered a crucial parameter; its speedy and accurate determination is essential for both economic and hydrologic reasons. An equation, in the form of a beta distribution, is developed which portrays the exact profile of baseflow curve and helps in determining the magnitude of baseflow. The equation is applicable for areas up to 2000 mi² (or 5000 km²), and larger.
