Abstract:

This paper describes the development and application of a one-dimensional mathematical model capable of simulating the changes to the cross-sections of a muddy tidal river over a time period of months to years. The basic theories of cohesive sediment transport which underpin the model are detailed. The model generates cross-section averaged hydrodynamics which in turn drive the sediment transport processes of erosion, advection and deposition. An application of the model to a UK muddy tidal river is presented; the model is used to predict the likely rate of accretion over a period of years following a river channel deepening scheme.
