Low-Level Waste Disposal Design: An Overview

Abstract:

Low-Level radioactive waste disposal is regulated by several agencies. Mixed waste, which is both radioactive and chemically hazardous is regulated by two agencies with potentially different requirements. A number of design technologies are available to accommodate different types of waste in different hydrogeologic settings. Some examples are presented in this paper. The selection of a technology and design parameters is based on a pathway analysis which considers potential failure scenarios for the disposal system and the movement of radionuclides through the environment to man.
