Artificial Recharge and Water Supply in The Netherlands

by J. H. Peters, Netherlands Waterworks' Testing, & Research Inst, Netherlands,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Artificial Recharge of Ground Water

Abstract:

In 1984 infiltration by surface spreading was 156 million m3, serving 15% of total supply of drinking water in the Netherlands. Already for some decades the possibility of recharging deeper aquifers is studied. At present research is directed to recharge wells since surface spreading meets serious opposition because of environmental impact. The paper deals with general description of surface spreading (locations, amounts and techniques of infiltration and recovery) and results of research on borehole recharge.
