Abstract:

Under the High Plains States Groundwater Demonstration Program, the Bureau of Reclamation has recommended construction of 21 projects in 17 western states. The projects contain technical and environmental elements that will contribute to new and innovative technology in diverse locales. The three recommended for Reclamation's Mid-Pacific Region are the Arcade Water District Project, in Sacramento, California; the Stockton East Water District Project, near Linden, California; and the Washoe County Public Works - Utility Division Project, near Reno, Nevada. Each will use injection wells or spreading basins to recharge declining water levels with surplus winter supplies. This paper describes the California and Nevada projects: the planning process, purpose, hydrogeology, ground water quality, environmental mitigation, and evaluation plans.
