Why Bifurcation: A Study of a Reticulated Dome

Numerical results for a hexagonal lattice dome subjected to uniform gravity loading are presented. We demonstrate that a perfect nonlinear bifurcation analysis plays a crucial role in the identification of the critical imperfection. In the process we also advertise the capabilities of some recently developed techniques for computational bifurcation problems with symmetry.
