Abstract:

Since its foundation on 1986 the Computational Mechanics Laboratory at the Polytechnic School of Sao Paulo has often been asked for non-linear stability analysis of wood and concrete structures. For this purpose a general but simple finite element has been developed for the non-linear analysis of plane frames with initially curved members, which allows for large nodal displacements and rotations, as well as large elongations and curvatures. This work presents the derivation of this element and the exact expressions for the element nodal forces vector and the tangent stiffness matrix. A general viscoelastic constitutive model is then introduced, having in mind the stability analysis of wood and concrete structures.
