Heath Building?Load Paths of an Underpinning

by Istvan Steven Varga, Weidlinger Associates Inc, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structural Design, Analysis and Testing

Abstract:

A case study of an underpinning is presented which, in principle, consists of the introduction of a transfer system in an existing building. The transfer system modifies the load paths through which the columns reach their foundations. In order to safely achieve the transfer, the changes in the load paths need to be carefully controlled, monitored, and confirmed. Close coordination and cooperation between Contractor and Engineer are essential during construction.
