Abstract:

An algorithm for designing a tubular structural member with constant taper is presented. The design criterion is that the maximum absolute stress produced by a set of loading conditions is less than the allowable stress. Also the cross-sections of the structure must be thick enough to yield before onset of local buckling and thin enough to be fabricated without exceeding the capacity of the forming equipment or cracking the plate.
