Abstract:

The results of an analytical and experimental study on the behavior of simple and double diagonal cross-bracings in vertical stiffening trusses and in built-up open web beams are presented and discussed. Simple design expressions for the evaluation of the effective length of the compression members are presented. It is shown that the transverse stiffness provided by the tension members depends upon the flexural stiffness of the tension member and upon the ratio of the compression force to the tension force. A limited experimental study shows that the proposed equations slightly underestimate the transverse stiffness and overestimate the effective length factor.
