Abstract:

The importance of a highly efficient schedule for space construction cannot be overestimated. A detailed scheduling process working closely with design data could reduce costs, minimize risk to human life, and contribute greatly to the success of a space construction project. However the information stored in a Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) 3D model is often not effectively utilized beyond the design phase of a project. If the appropriate software system existed, design data could be used to improve the planning and management of construction, procurement, start-up operations, and maintenance tasks. Such a software system has been developed at Bechtel Western Power Company. This program provides mechanisms for transferring CADD 3D data to a high performance workstation. Sequencing and precedence information are then added to produce a complete, detailed Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule before site work begins.
