Extraterrestrials Excavation and Mining with Explosives

by Charles E. Joachim, US Army Engineer Waterways, Experiment Station, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Space

Abstract:

Explosion excavation technology may become a valuable tool for economic and efficient base station construction on extraterrestrial bodies. Criteria for explosives which can safely be transported and used in space are discussed. A few candidate materials are cited. Charge hole techniques including space drills and directed energy devices are compared. Gravity and atmosphere scaling relations developed by dynamic similitude techniques are evaluated.
