Abstract:

This paper covers the general types of water pipe joints presently in the ground in the United States. It also covers the methods used to repair joints and damaged pipes, pipe cutting, tapping into pipelines for large branches, inserting valves, and emergency installation of new pipelines. It is a brief review in order to introduce new pipeline designers to existing cast-iron water pipe systems which may be encountered during the emergency and restoration phases following an earthquake.
