Abstract:

The total length of public sewers in the UK is 160, 000 miles and in recent years there has been increasing concern over their conditions. Research spearheaded by the Water Research Centre (WRc) to investigate possible ways of significantly extending the service life and improve the hydraulic performance of sewer systems has resulted in greater understanding of the problems involved. This research has covered the whole field of sewerage rehabilitation, the term used in the UK to cover the solution of both structural and hydraulic problems in a collection system. Applicability of this research to problems in the US is discussed.
