Abstract:

Presented herein is a probabilistic model based on derived distributions to predict shear strength of soils and the safety factor of slopes considering uncertain properties of soil, namely: cohesion and the angle of internal friction. The probability density functions of both variables were developed; then the stability of slopes is determined by employing the Swedish method of slices. It is concluded that shear strength and the uncertainty in evaluating the factor of safety for the stability of slopes follow normal distributions.
