Abstract:

This paper will provide a performance evaluation of the technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of the rim-drive turbine after more than one year of operation. Technical aspects of the turbines, such as the sealing mechanism around the rim, and the performance and maintenance of the belt drive system, will be discussed. Field testing of the turbines was conducted in spring of 1987, and the results compared with the expected performance as determined from previously conducted laboratory model tests. In addition, cost information of the rim-drive turbine is included.
