Abstract:

STS Consultants, Ltd. (STS) and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) successfully teamed on four hydropower sites in Michigan during the 1980's. Three of the four sites were merely retrofits to a certain era or period back in the early 1980's. The fourth site presented an unusual opportunity to build a brand new powerhouse facility on the Kalamazoo River near Kalamazoo, Michigan. STS had purchased an 1800-acre area along the Kalamazoo River called Morrow Lake. The existing facility was a earthen dam with concrete core wall and a spillway area with four tainter gates. The engineering was straight-forward.
