Abstract:

The paper presents a case history in the selection of a site for a large pumped-storage project for Oglethorpe Power Corporation. The case history illustrates how a large number of potential sites were screened using a relatively simple, although strict, set of guidelines to select a preferred site. The process considered technical factors and environmental characteristics to select the best overall site while operating within the framework of applicable regulatory processes. Approximately 167 sites in the state of Georgia and a limited surrounding area were identified to satisfy certain minimum physical criteria. Three levels of evaluations and screening were carried out using increasingly restrictive criteria.
