Abstract:

In 1985 the Transportation Research Board sponsored a report by MacDorman and Associated titled 'Extraboard Management: Procedures and Tools'. The report targeted the transit property dispatch office as an area where increased use of computers could save time and money. Computerization of the dispatch office has been slow for a number of reasons. Operators, schedule, and bids must be stored accurately and in a way that allows modification. There must be a plan for computer down time. The system must allow for multiple users, must interface to the property's scheduling and payroll systems, must blend into the hectic dispatch office environment, and must incorporate aspects of the property's union contract.
