Concrete Shell Design for Membrane Stress

by Morris N. Fialkow,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Materials and Member Behavior

Abstract:

A methodology is presented which covers the design of reinforced concrete shells for membrane stress. The methodology follows the strength design method of the ACI 318-83 Building Code and has been confirmed by satisfactory agreement between predicted and test results. Detailed procedures are presented for the calculation of membrane crushing strength, determination of failure mode, and design of reinforcement and concrete. Strength reduction factors are recommended so as to insure conservatism of design.
