Abstract:

A numerical fatigue model for cables and rope strand subjected to fluctuating axial tension has been developed. This model determines the maximum wire nominal and Hertz contact stresses, and predicts the number-of-cycles to fatigue failure. Good agreement between experimental test data and numerical analysis results give support to this model. An extension of this work which considers the contact stresses present between adjacent strands in a wire rope is presently under development.
