Abstract:

This paper reports tests conducted to evaluate an aluminum orthotropic deck. Approximately 60 welded T-joints with 6061-T6 stems and 5456-H321 plate were subjected to flexural fatigue loadings having stress ratios of minus 10, minus 2, or 0. These tests indicated that, due to crack closure during the compressive portion of the cycle, only a fraction of the minimum stress needs to be considered when calculating the stress range. Static tests were conducted to determine the ultimate strengths of the deck panel components. These tests included three-point bending of several panels, various web crush tests, and a three-point bend test of a panel-to-panel joint.
