Abstract:

The Chapter on Frame Stability of the Fourth Edition of the SSRC Guide provides guidance on use of several stability design procedures. These include Critical Load Concept, Second-Order Inelastic Analysis, P-Delta Methods, Merchant-Rankine Formula and Moment Amplification Method. Numerical examples are presented illustrating the use of these several methods and results are compared. It is concluded that all methods are safe. The P-Delta Method is the preferred design method to account for frame instability.
