Abstract:

The static and dynamic lateral impedance of pile foundations for which there is continuous contact between the bottom of the pilecap and the underlying soil is investigated. A parametric analysis of finite element results for the lateral impedance of a single pile with a concentric circular pilecap on a uniform soil layer over bedrock is presented. For the range of system parameters considered, the static lateral stiffness for these single pile foundations is found to be dominated by cap-soil rather than pile-soil interaction. The dynamic lateral impedances of a single pile Contact foundation is found to vary with forcing frequency in a manner similar to that for a Mat foundation. Approximate procedures for establishing the dynamic impedance of a Contact foundation, where one knows the impedance of the corresponding Mat foundation, are presented.
