Abstract:

This paper focuses on the dynamic behaviour of the Skytrain cable-stayed bridge under the action of earthquakes and wind. The 340 m span railway bridge is located on the west coast of Canada in a highly seismic area. The paper discusses various aspects related to seismic analysis and design of the bridge. Also described are the experimental and analytical investigations of the bridge's stability against flutter and its response to buffeting by transverse wind turbulence. Design parameters affecting the aerodynamic stability of the bridge are discussed and temporary measures to reduce its response to buffeting during construction are proposed.
