Prediction and Control of the Wind Response of Long-Span Bridges with Plate Girder Decks

by Peter A. Irwin, Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin, Inc, Guelph, Ont, Canada,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Bridges and Transmission Line Structures

Abstract:

The aerodynamic stability of plate girder decks and methods of improving it are discussed. The selection of an appropriate design wind speed for flutter is reviewed including the effect of the directionality of strong winds. Not all bridge decks have a uniform cross-section along their entire length and rail or highway traffic can also result in span wise nonuniformities. The effect of this on aerodynamic stability is examined. A discussion of turbulence buffeting is also included.
