Abstract:

This paper reviews the multiple presence reduction factors specified in the AASHTO and Ontario codes, and provides a method by which these factors can be established in relation to volume of traffic. It is shown that the volume of traffic has a considerable influence on the reduction factors. The paper proposes a set of reduction factors which are applicable to both the AASHTO and Ontario codes; it also presents charts with which realistic estimates of the reduction factor can be obtained for particular bridges and for given densities of traffic.
